One of the main factors that affect the distribution of species and forest types is the physical condition of the soil especially those affecting moisture supply, root aeration and the availability of chemical nutrients (Champion & Seth, 1968).

(Soil profile in Nameri with the gravelly sub surface)

As per the FAO classification, the soil type found in Nameri is 'Cambisol'. The same soil is also known as “Inceptisols” under USDA soil classification system.

These soils are in the initial stage of soil profile development and the inter horizon differences are not so prominent. The emerging horizons may show evidence of some color changes. The B horizon's presence indicated by the accumulation of small amounts of clay, salts and organic material. Such type of soils are mainly derived from wide range of rocks mostly in alluvial, colluvial and aeolian deposits.
